Making self-paced learning a breeze to complete
Jun 15, 2025
Most companies rely on e-learning, which are often multimedia, multiple-choice and/or interactive modules sitting in an LMS (Learning Management System) that are required to be completed during onboarding, annually or during a change, with reporting and notifications to leaders if learning is not completed before the deadline. The content is often pretty dry, occasionally the execution is interesting (I did one once that was a game show), and the purpose is often compliance. Trying to get people to complete training when they would rather go and do their day job is a tough gig and e-learning does the best it can.
So when it comes to self-paced training which is not reliant on e-learning or compliance or mandatory completion, you need to change your approach and motivate people of their volition to complete self-paced learning. And because I had to consider these when putting together my Leading Successful Change program, we’ll use this as a case study example.
Is it desirable?
I would actually say that we should try and make every training desirable - self-paced or not. You want people to want to do it. You can do this through a marketing campaign before training starts - to make it inspiring and exciting to be part of it and truly build internal motivation before you even join my Leading Successful Change program. My marketing, including my free masterclasses, webinars, and workshops are a marketing campaign into LSC, that give you a little taste test of it and also help you build that commitment to join and complete the program. And that's where so much Change Management is lacking. They don't bring a marketing campaign to the change. They don't use teaser videos ahead of time. They don't use testimonials of people who have done it already to show the value and pleasure of the change. Some of the other things that increase the desire in the program is the gamification, with rewards at the end of each module with positive reinforcement for good behaviour (rather than punishment for non-completion), live coaching calls to ask questions, share wins and work through challenges in a safe and supportive space with an expert coach (that’s me!), and a global community of like-minded women who are leading change all over the world.
Is it digestible?
Next with Leading Successful Change, I’ve made it really easy to make your way through the course and content. You get in-built prompts - weekly emails when the new modules are released, so that lets you know that there's new content. Each module is chunked down into bite-sizes: the course is 6 weekly modules, there’s 5 topics in each module, and super short video lessons that are just 3-10 minutes long in each topic. Chunking it down into manageable bites means it’s super easy to get through the module lessons of the week AND feel like you’re making progress. It’s also only 6 weeks long so you get to maintain momentum. I’ve done courses that are 10 weeks long and it can be hard to maintain that commitment but 6 weeks is enough time to learn lots without having to put your job and life on hold for months or even years.
Is it easy to access?
Having easy access to self-paced learning is a huge factor in completion. I love my Leading Successful Change program because my students can access it both via an online desktop browser but also via a mobile app. That means they can do the lessons on the run, and I’ve had students doing lessons while waiting for their kids to finish sport, going for a walk, or brushing their teeth. The coaching calls too can be accessed via computer or mobile. If you want to remove the barriers to completion, you need to open up the channels for access.
Now it's still up to the individual student whether or not they want to complete a self-paced learning like Leading Successful Change. I can't control whether or not somebody completes the modules, as my students are adults who have made the decision to do the course after all! Still I want to encourage you, incentivise you, and support you through the process as much as possible. So I’ve built in tons of levers and triggers to motivate my students and what’s great is that they have an immersive experience of these tools, tips and techniques, know it’s working for them right now, and have proof and evidence that you could take all of these concepts and apply them to your internal Change Management training.
People's psychology doesn’t change. You use the same techniques and concepts in a lot of different ways. And that's what Change is all about. It's transforming people from the inside out. And when you internally motivate people to do it, you end up with better commitment. You end up with better follow through, better completion rates.
