I’m a Change Manager and most of what people think we do is communications. But someone new entered the industry who never says no, writes comms in a heartbeat, and is willing to work 24/7.

ChatGPT.

So not just me, but also a lot of Changies in my industry, have paused for a hot minute and thought: will we be replaced?

And the truth is no.

Because most of what I do is NOT communications.

Communications is a transferable skill we use in Change Management but it’s not actually the outcome.

In fact, in every Change Management job I’ve ever had, I spent most of my time swanning around the office having coffee with people or sitting on virtual meetings listening to conversations that had very little to do with me.

But I listened.

I absorbed.

I made sense of it all.

I built relationships.

I built connections.

And when it came to do output (write a communications, create a pretty pack, run a briefing session), I could create meaningful, relevant, concise and clear meaning in a heartbeat.

Yep - there’ll be lots of bosses and projects who take the basic communication they ordered ChatGPT to write and actually send it out to their people as is.

But where the real work happens is the reading between the lines, the emotion, the human element, the human touch and the relevant, real-world (and accurate!) examples. And if anything, I saw an opportunity: to write less communications and focus on what I do best: build people’s confidence to change.

The interesting thing is that I’ve been banging on about the impact of digital transformation on jobs for years before COVID. I knew that the World Economic Forum estimated that 75 million jobs worldwide would be impacted by technology like automation and AI, and in our little country the Committee for Economic Development in Australia (CEDA) had estimated 5 million jobs would be lost by 2025 (i.e. this year).

Sadly, my doomsday predictions were a little before their time and ahead of the eight ball - no one really cared back then, COVID delayed it for a bit.

But the inevitable is back on track and it’s sped up to where it was always going to be.

So rather than be sitting ducks, now is the time to futureproof your career with confidence and be sure that no matter what - you’ve got a bright, strong path ahead.
