You deserve this: Building the courage to change careers
Aug 09, 2026
I lived in a little French village for a month, and would swim laps at the local pool.
On my last day in the village, I noticed the diving board that kids were always jumping off.
And I thought… why not?
I’m pretty risk-averse, but the diving board didn’t look very high.
So I climbed the ladder and tiptoed to the edge.
It was SO much higher than I thought it would be!
I was actually really scared.
But I thought - “It’s my last day here, it’s my last chance.”
I dived and it was the craziest rush of water around me.
But I was absolutely ok :)
I swam to the edge, climbed out, and felt exhilarated.
Sometimes, we have to be brave and trust in ourselves to get the magical experiences we dream of.
And you know what…
Every time you take a chance and do something new and scary, it becomes easier.
A few years ago, I went to Cairns and had the chance to jump from a boulder into a rainforest river.
Remember - I’m risk averse.
But I thought: “It’s my only chance to do it.”
So I did it.
And the NEXT day, we visited a waterfall.
People were sitting behind the waterfall then diving THROUGH the waterfall!!
I’ve never swum in a waterfall.
And I knew I may never get the chance to do it again.
So, by myself, I made my way along the side of the pool, climbed onto the rocks, and sat behind the curtain of water crashing and roaring in gallons from above.
The sun streamed in, making rainbows in the spray before me.
No one else was around, I was cocooned in a haven of water, colour and light - the most magical experience.
But then I had to decide - would I dive through the waterfall?
I was scared the water would push me down, or back against the rocks.
Others had been doing it successfully… could I?
Maybe I wasn’t as strong or as brave as them.
I almost turned back… but then I thought… “This might be the only chance I ever get to swim through a waterfall!”
So I mustered up my courage.
Slid to the edge of the rock.
Took a deep breath.
And launched myself through the curtain of crashing water, right through the waterfall.
I easily surfaced and swam to the edge to get out of the pool.
I was so proud of myself. It goes down as one of the best experiences of my life and something I’ll never regret.
Courage isn’t learned.
It’s built.
Every time you do something for yourself, even if it’s scary, even if you’re alone, even if you’ve never done it before, you build the muscle and get the magical experience you might never have had.
