I’ve done a lot of “this vs that” blog posts in my day, including:

Just to name a few!

So I thought, why not bundle them altogether into one master “Change vs X” blog post!

Change Analyst vs Change Manager

Change Manager: A Change Manager has had more time working in Change (but not always), is more experienced in delivering great change (but not always!, does less of the grunt work (but not always!!)

Change Analyst: A Change Analyst may do impact assessments, write communications, map and maintain stakeholder lists, create training guides, and do the admin for workshops and launches (but Change Managers may do these things too!).

Change vs Training

Change Management: "Moving a group of people from what they are currently thinking, feeling and doing to a new way of thinking, feeling and doing, in order to realise the benefits of a business change."

Training: Building skills, knowledge and capability on how to do things differently

Change vs Communications

Change Management: See above

Communications: Internal communications - all the emails, newsletters, events, town halls, leader videos, and more that help explain and convey organisational information, news, updates, processes and actions.

Change Manager vs Project Manager

Change Manager: Change Management is focused on helping people feel informed, inspired, confident, and ready to understand, adopt, use and embed that "thing" to realise the business benefits.

Project Manager: Focused on delivery of the "thing" (be it a new process, system, product, service, team structure etc) by managing scope, budget, time and quality to realise the business case.

IT Change Management vs Organisational Change Management

IT Change Management: "Change Management" in the ITIL process is usually related to the CAB (Change Advisory Board), which is a process and regular meeting held to review and approve any proposed changes in the system itself.

Organisational Change Management: As above and your focus is on people – ensuring they are inspired, informed, comfortable and ready for the change so it can be accepted, embraced and embedded.

Change vs Transformation

Change Management: I would define "change" as a single, sole, discrete organisational change related to a project that is almost like a tweak or improvement to the way things are currently done.

Transformation: A "transformation" I'd define as a complete shift in the way things are being done that will fundamentally impact operations, operating model, market position, culture, and/or ways of working etc. It's usually a collection of projects and programs or a really big program of work with lots of moving parts that is going to have a fundamental strategic impact on the business' growth or opportunities.
