3 hidden secrets for practising change when you don't work in Change Management
Mar 15, 2026
Not everyone who joins my Leading Successful Change program is working as a Change Management practitioner or plans to make the career change to Change Management. I get Project Managers, Human Resources professionals, Operational managers, senior leaders and more joining LSC to learn the valuable Change Management skills to help them be more effective in their current role. After all, Change Management is a transferable skill and as AI takes over more of the technical tasks, it will be the soft, human skills like those in Change Management that will place professionals in a better standing for the future of work.
However, in my Leading Successful Change program, I’m always recommending for you to practise the tools, techniques and templates. It’s the fastest way to not only learn the tool, but to integrate your learning, flex to your style, and prove its value by getting a result.
So what happens if you’re not currently working in Change Management? How do you practise the tools?
Here’s a few options:
Retrofit a past change
So this can be one that you led (fill out using what you WOULD have done) or one that you experienced (fill out using what you THINK the leadership/project/change team WOULD have done or SHOULD have done). Retrofitting a past change is amazing because the content is already there so you can solely focus on the practice element.
Use the tools for an upcoming change
Even if you’re not leading change, you’re probably leading people OR receiving a change right now (Change is pretty much happening ALL THE TIME these days). So you could practise the tools, with or without stakeholders, imagining the current change. You could even provide your outputs to the leadership/project team to add real-life value, if there’s no Change team in place. Or take them on the journey to discover the gap missing in Change right now…
Use the tools for your own team
If you’re a people leader or manager with direct reports, you are literally leading change all the time. Even if you’re not the one who initiated the change, you can be the one who helps your team feel prepared and ready for it and apply all the tools to your team specifically rather than change-wide/organisation-wide.
Regardless of which approach you decide, practising the tools at least once (even if you have to retrofit) will take you from knowledge to confidence.
